What solar actually costs in Malaysia

In 2026, installed solar PV in Malaysia typically costs RM 3.00–4.20 per watt-peak for residential systems and RM 2.20–3.20 per Wp for commercial and industrial systems, before incentives. A 10 kWp home system therefore lands around RM 30,000–42,000, and a 500 kWp factory system around RM 1.1–1.6 million — before GITA and Capital Allowance, which can recover a substantial share of commercial capex.

We publish these ranges because most Malaysian installers will not.

What is included — and what is not

Included in an EVOLTS quotation

  • Tier-1 solar modules and smart inverters
  • Mounting system, DC and AC cabling, protection devices
  • 3D drone survey and roof loading analysis
  • All TNB, Suruhanjaya Tenaga and Bomba submissions
  • Installation, testing and commissioning
  • Monitoring platform setup and handover documentation

Priced separately when required

  • Structural reinforcement where the roof cannot carry the array
  • Roof repair or recovering before installation
  • Switchboard or incoming supply upgrades
  • Battery energy storage
  • Extended O&M contracts beyond the standard period
On unusually cheap quotations

If a quotation is materially below these ranges, the saving is almost always in module tier, inverter brand, mounting quality or the absence of a structural survey. Those are the four things that determine whether the system still performs in year 12.

How payback is calculated

Payback is the point where cumulative savings equal net capital cost. The inputs that matter are your tariff category, your consumption pattern, system yield, and — for businesses — the tax treatment.

Illustrative method, not a quotation. Assumes commercial tariff and self-consumption of generation.

Net capital cost≈ RM 676,000
Annual generation≈ 600,000 kWh

Frequently asked

How much does solar panel installation cost in Malaysia?

Residential systems typically cost RM 3.00–4.20 per watt-peak installed, and commercial or industrial systems RM 2.20–3.20 per Wp, before incentives. A 10 kWp home system is roughly RM 30,000–42,000.

Why is commercial solar cheaper per watt than residential?

Fixed costs — survey, design, submissions, mobilisation — are spread across far more capacity, and large uninterrupted roof spans install more efficiently than small residential roofs with obstructions.

Are there financing options?

Yes. Several Malaysian banks offer green financing for solar, and commercial projects can sometimes be structured so that repayment is offset by the resulting bill reduction. We can outline the options once system size is established.

Does the price include TNB approval?

In an EVOLTS quotation, yes. We prepare and lodge all TNB, Suruhanjaya Tenaga and Bomba submissions as part of scope. Always check whether a competing quotation does the same.

What ongoing costs should I budget for?

Cleaning and periodic health checks, plus eventual inverter replacement — inverters generally have a shorter service life than modules. See maintenance.
